More cars stolen so far this year, Toyota RAV4 is favourite type

More cars and other vehicles were stolen in the Netherlands in the first half of 2025, with 3,645 passenger vehicles reported missing – an increase of more than 20% on last year, according to car insurance monitor Stichting VbV.

The financial damage from these thefts reached around €64 million, up €23 million from 2024. Criminals also stole 10% more vans.

Although moped thefts dropped by around 5%, thieves still stole 4,813 two-wheelers—making them the most targeted category overall.

The most popular car among thieves was the Toyota RAV4s – 232 were stolen in the first six months of the year, which is 30% up on 2024. The Kia Sportage saw an even steeper increase, with thefts jumping from 19 to 82.

Police recovered more than 7,000 stolen vehicles so far this year, with 90% found within the Netherlands. Officers also found over 100 vehicles in Germany and Belgium.
