Teen killed, two injured in severe car-truck crash near Spier

An 18-year-old man from Amersfoort died early Saturday morning in a severe collision between a car and a truck on the A28 highway near Spier, Drenthe, police confirmed. Two other men, aged 20 and 19 from Hoevelaken and Leusden, were seriously injured, according to AD. All three were passengers in the same car.

The crash occurred around 6:15 a.m. for reasons still unknown, causing the car and truck to collide violently. Emergency services responded immediately, dispatching four ambulances, firefighters, and a trauma helicopter. Due to the severity of the accident, firefighters erected privacy screens at the scene.

The A28 in the direction of Hoogeveen has been completely closed. The highway is reportedly littered with debris from the crash. Authorities are diverting traffic off at the Spier exit, warning drivers to expect significant delays and advising the use of alternate routes.

Rijkswaterstaat said the highway closure will remain in effect until late afternoon to allow thorough police investigation and vehicle recovery operations. Motorists should prepare for extended travel times.
