The Dutch government may have collapsed, but MPs have given caretaker ministers the green light to proceed with most of the draft legislation already on the table, following a series of votes in recent days.
Normally, few significant political decisions are made after a cabinet collapse. However, the VVD and right-wing BBB have insisted on pushing ahead with proposals drawn up by the outgoing coalition, despite the withdrawal of the far right PVV.
“It would be extremely irresponsible to halt work on important issues,” BBB leader Caroline van der Plas said.
This means the widely criticised climate plans from Sophie Hermans will be debated, along with most of the defence ministry proposals, regulations to reduce nitrogen-based pollution and Marjolein Faber’s controversial efforts to curb asylum applications.
Efforts to streamline planning procedures and speed up the construction of new homes will also continue.
How much progress is made remains to be seen, with parliament set to break for its summer recess on Friday July 4. MPs will return in early September, ahead of the general election on October 29.
