A 26-year-old man from Steenwijk died early Sunday morning in a single-vehicle crash in the rural area of Steenwijkerwold, RTV Oost reports. The victim was a passenger in the car.
The 26-year-old driver, also from Steenwijk, suffered serious injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he remains in stable condition and is no longer in life-threatening danger.
The crash occurred around 12:30 a.m. on the Steenwijkerdiep-Noord, an unpaved road. For reasons still unknown, the driver lost control of the vehicle, which then struck a tree and came to a stop partially in a nearby agricultural field.
A trauma helicopter from the Mobiel Medisch Team in Amsterdam was initially dispatched to the scene but was called off shortly before landing. Police have launched a full investigation into the cause of the accident.
