Bollywood actress Rakul Preet Singh has voiced strong criticism against the social media frenzy surrounding star Indian cricketer Virat Kohli’s accidental like on actress Avneet Kaur’s photos on Instagram.
The controversy erupted earlier this month when eagle-eyed fans noticed Kohli’s verified Instagram account had liked a post featuring Avneet Kaur. The interaction instantly went viral, sparking widespread gossip and leading to a dramatic surge of nearly 2 million new followers for Kaur.

As the chatter intensified, RCB batter Virat Kohli issued a public clarification, attributing the like to a technical mishap while clearing his feed and urging fans not to make unwarranted assumptions.

Rakul Preet Singh calls out backlash over Kohli’s like on Avneet Kaur’s post
Rakul Preet, speaking on Shubhankar Mishra’s podcast, did not mince words about the episode. “Too sad yaar. That is too sad. Hum bohot vele hain (we are so jobless), that we even know that his like increased 2 million followers for her. How does it matter if he liked or didn’t or it happened by mistake? It often happens on Instagram that you unfollow friends by mistake. It’s so sad that just because he’s a celebrity, what he likes, doesn’t like turns into news,” she remarked, highlighting the triviality of the debate.
She further questioned the priorities of social media users and the media, stating, “People are focusing excessively on irrelevant topics. This is deeply disappointing. It makes me wonder if we all have so much time on our hands. No one even considered whether Virat Kohli liked the post intentionally or by mistake. Sometimes, we accidentally unfollow even our close friends on Instagram. But since Kohli is a celebrity, even the smallest actions related to him are made viral. This is very unfortunate. He has already clarified the matter.”
Rakul also addressed the scrutiny faced by public figures, noting, “When you are a celebrity at Virat’s level, everything that you do comes under the scanner. Even if you follow a profile, it becomes news. We waste so much time on social media, it’s not needed”.
When asked about the impact of the controversy on Avneet Kaur, Rakul pointed out the absurdity of the situation: “We are so jobless that we even know that his one like increased 2 million followers for the girl. How does it matter? It’s so sad that it became news.”
