Netherlands 3-0 Wales: Miedema ton up as Oranje overpower Wales

Vivianne Miedema notched up her 100th international goal as the Netherlands opened their European championship campaign with a comfortable win against Wales.

Three goals in 10 minutes either side of half-time were enough to seal the points after the Dutch had struggled to break down a stubborn Welsh defence in the first half.

Jill Roord went closest with a shot that cannoned back off the right-hand post shortly before half-time, before Miedema struck just as the teams were getting ready to go into the dressing-room.

Daniëlle van de Donk found the Manchester City striker on the edge of the penalty area and Miedema was given time to control the ball before lofting a shot over Olivia Clark into the far corner.

Oranje started the second half with more purpose and took just two minutes to double their lead. Van de Donk was the provider again, this time crossing from the right-hand side for Victoria Pelova to score her first international goal in two years.

Roord and Jackie Groenen both hit the aluminium as the Dutch threatened to run rampant, before Pelova turned provider, playing a looping cross from the right that Esmee Brugts turned in from close range.

Beerensteyn denied

Substitute Chasity Grant, on for Van de Donk, had two good chances to get on the scoresheet, but flashed one shot just wide while another was cleared off the line.

Miedema was taken off after 70 minutes as a precaution, having recently come back from a hamstring injury, to give the recovering Lineth Beerensteyn game time. The striker had the ball in the net in the 83rd minute from a tight angle, but was marginally offside.

Brugts was replaced soon afterwards by Sherida Spitse, who came on to win her 245th international cap, extending her European record.

Wales’s hopes of any consolation were effectively ended when Ceri Holland, one of the few players to offer any threat, limped off 10 minutes from the end.

Next up for the Dutch is a showdown with European champions England, whose coach Sarina Wiegman has won the title with both countries, on Wednesday evening in Zurich.
