Tariffs part of Trump’s plan to annex Canada, says Trudeau, who promises it won’t happen
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused U.S. President Donald Trump of wanting to “see a complete collapse of the Canadian economy.”
“Because that will make it easier to annex us, is the second part of his thought,” said Trudeau.
“That is never going to happen.”
Trump has repeatedly suggested Canada should be the 51st state and suggested he’d lift tariffs if that were to happen.
The prime minister told Canadians he believes that’s the reason Trump is moving ahead so aggressively.
He called the president’s claims the tariffs are needed because of fentanyl seeping across the border from Canada to the U.S. “completely bogus” and fact-checked Trump’s claim that U.S. banks are not allowed to operate in Canada. (They are.)
Trudeau vowed that American families, and Trump, will soon feel how damaging the tariffs are.
